Half-title: United States exploring expedition. [During the years 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842. Under the command of Charles Wilkes, U.S.N. vol.I-V].

On half-title: By authority of Congress.

Atlas has title: Atlas. Narrative ... By authority of Congress.

By act of Congress, Aug. 26, 1842, the edition of the reports of the U.S. Exploring expedition were limited to 100 copies. Mr. Wilkes, however, secured copyright on his Narrative on the expedition, and under that privilege published an edition of 250 copies, of which the government received 100 copies. Under the copyright privilege, he also brought out other and cheaper editions. It was issued: Philadelphia, Lee and Blanchard, 1845. 5 v. and atlas: 1845, 1849, 1852, 1854. 5 v.--Philadelphia, 1850. 5 v.--New York, G.P. Putnam, 1851, and 1856. 5 v.--London, Printed in Philadelphia, 1845. 5 v.; Ingram, Cooke & co., 1852. 2 v.; Whittaker & co. [printed 1845] 1 v. (Condensed and abridged)

There is also an abridged edition in 1 volume with title: Voyage round the world ... Philadelphia, G.W. Gorton, 1849; New York, G.P. Putnam, 1851.
