The classic parable of communal hysteria Written as an indictment of the McCarthyism that gripped America in the 1950s, this re-creation of the Salem witchcraft trials of the seventeenth century remains sharply contemporary in its precision and savagery. From a foundation of bigotry and ignorance, Miller shows how the emotions of the small Salem community are stirred into madness. As the play reaches its violent climax, the events it describes become a timeless vision of the evils of mindless persecution.

Work Description
The Crucible is a 1953 play by American playwright Arthur Miller. It is a dramatized and partially fictionalized story of the Salem witch trials that took place in the Massachusetts Bay Colony during 1692–93. Miller wrote the play as an allegory for McCarthyism, when the United States government persecuted people accused of being communists.
