A translation of 'Discours préliminaire', which forms the second part of his 'De la manière d'enseigner et d'étudier les belles-lettres'.

First published anonymously in London in 1732; despite the imprint, no Dublin edition is recorded.

J. S. D.S.P. = Jonathan Swift, Dean of St. Patrick's, but in fact written by Charles Rollin.
