Sheets and colour wood-engraved plates, except for t.p. and the additional pages [xiii]-xvi ("Index to Illustrations."), are the same as an edition of this title published by S. O. Beeton [i.e. Ward, Lock & Tyler] between 1868 and 1869, and printed by J. Ogden and Co. Wood-engraved plates [3] and [11] as found in this edition are missing in the later edition. See McLean O 618.
Publisher's device printed on t.p.
Author's preface is dated 1864.
Includes small decorative wood-engraved initials.
Most wood-engraved plates are unsigned. A few are signed "J. J. Hardwick and W. M. R. Quick". Other signatures include "W. Thomas" and "R. Huttula". A few col. wood-engraved plates are signed "E. Evans Sc.".
Some of the colour wood-engraved plates include areas printed in colour with metal.
Numerous wood-engraved illustrations within the text are signed "W. Thomas" or "W. L. Thomas" and many others are signed "J. J. Hardwick". Other signatures include J. C. Danby, C. P. Nicholls, R. Huttula, Ferrier, E. Evans, J. J. Portch and W. M. R. Quick.
MASS copy: Bound in blue morocco-grain cloth blocked in gold and blind; a.e.g. Upper cover and spine with signature: "WHR" [i.e. William Harry Rogers]. Spine with imprint: "London : S. O. Beeton". With binder's ticket: "Bound by Bone & Son. 76, Fleet Street, London.".
