Colour wood-engraved plates are unsigned. All are with title captions.

Colour plates were printed by Benjamin Fawcett. Cf. McLean, Ruari and Antonia. Benjamin Fawcett: engraver and colour printer, 1988.

Most wood-engraved illustrations within the text are unsigned. A few are signed "E. Whymper Sc." [i.e. Edward Whymper?]. One is signed "WAD del." and "Beech", and another is signed: "Collings".

Includes small wood-engraved decorative initials and tail-pieces.

Includes "Index.": p. [256]-258.

Publisher's advertisements on p. [1-6] at end.

MASS copy: Bound in green sand-grain cloth blocked in gold, black and blind in the same design as McLean D 0506 and McLean D 0509. Spine with imprint: "Groombridge". Boards with bevelled edges. With pale pastel yellow glazed endpapers. With ownership inscription: "J. F. Cuthill".
