This short novel is a satire on the philosophical stories popular at the time, such as Voltaire’s Candide. A young man is accompanied on his travels by an older wiser teacher, who explains various situations they encounter in terms of happiness or otherwise.

Edition Notes

At head of title: New Mode of printing.

One of two issues described in C. R. Cheney's John Cheney and his descendants, 1936, p. 29.

"Philip Rusher patented this 'new mode' in 1802, and put it to a practical test in 1804, by the publication of this book, which is about as ugly a specimen of typography as can be conceived. His plan is to abolish all descending letters, such as g, p, and q, and instead to use a small capital. Although two other books in the same type were advertised the 'improvement' stopped with 'Rasselas.'"--Bigmore and Wyman.

Bigmore, E. C. and C. W. H. Wyman. Bibliography of printing, v. 2, p. 280.
