"This treatise was a thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, School of Languages and Literature, University of Surrey Roehampton, September 2000."--Acknowledgements to the Publication.

"The aim of this study is to survey the toy book, a popular form of Victorian picture book which was published in the second half of the nineteenth century in Britain on a huge scale by many publishers ... I concentrate on toy book publications by the firm of Routledge, since Routledge was the only firm that published toy books serially throughout the whole of the second half of the nineteenth century and produced the masterpieces of Walter Crane and Randolph Caldecott in collaboration with the engraver-printer, Edmund Evans; these three men together significantly influenced later picture books."--Preface.
