To test the theory that acidic bogs can tolerate and ameliorate acid mine drainage (AMD), AMD was introduced into a bog receiving diffuse AMD and an untouched bog. A study of the bogs' vegetation demonstrated that both areas deteriorated upon reception of AMD. Ecological engineering techniques applied to improve the bogs via bacterial alkalinity generation were discussed.
