Edition Notes

Added t.p., engraved and illustrated: The grave : a poem by Blair with illustrations from designs by Wm. Blake. 1847.

A reissue of the 1847 edition, it included the Advertisement to the London edition by R.H. Cromek (p. [vii]-viii); remarks by Henry Fuseli (p. ix-x); an essay entitled: Of the designs by B.H. Malkin (p. [35]-38); a Biographical sketch of Robert Blair ([xi]-xiii); and added a biography of William Blake compiled chiefly from Cunningham (1830) (p. [v]-vi), and Phillips's portrait of Blake from the 1808 ed.; but omitted Blake's dedicatory poem, "To the Queen".

The plates are reduced to about a quarter of their original size and were re-engraved with the inscription "Wm Blake del., A.L. Dick sc."

The order and position of the plates are slightly altered. As in the 1847 edition Plate 3, "The meeting of a Family in Heaven", is omitted, and the genitals of the naked gentlemen in plates 1 & 8 are decorously covered with filmy drapery.

Bound in brown pebbled cloth, boards elaborately blind-stamped and gilt lettering, as issued.
