Tina is a sixth-grader with a mission: She desperately wants her family to "adopt" a needy child through the Rescue the Children program. But how can they afford it? She and her brother Nathaniel make plans to earn the necessary money themselves, but Tina's little sister Angela doesn't seem to understand what it's all about. Tina explains to Angela about all the children in the world who don't have enough food to eat or a decent place to live.

"And no stuffed animals?" Angela asks in horror.

"Oh honestly, Angela!" Tina explodes. "That's not the most serious part."
