"Beautiful presentation of the illustrations from Durán's well-known work. Editor's introduction presents a brief physical description of the illustrations, as well as a biography of Durán and his work, but high quality reproductions of the illustrations themselves, along with descriptive captions, dominate the work"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.

Edition Notes

The first edition includes the 3 parts of the original manuscript.
The first part, chapters 1-78, treats the history of Mexico to the end of the conquest (1581).
The second part, chapters 79-101, deals with the Mexican divinities, rites, festivals and temples.
The third part contains an exposition of the calendar (vol. 2, p. 247-305) and is followed by the Appendix, Explicación del códice geroglífico de Mr. Aubin, por Alfredo Chavero (172 p. at end of v. 2).
The Atlas contains reproductions of the colored designs in the 3 parts of the manuscript and a facsimile of the Códice geroglífico de Mr. Aubin, the liturgical calendar known as the Codex Ixtlilxochitl, now in the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris, Mss. Mex. 65-71

Notice: "The entire edition of the first volume [published in 1867] with the exception of a small number of copies, distributed privately by the author, as well as the Atlas, has been confiscated by the Mexican government."--Sabin, Bibl. amer., 1873.
