A strange bet, with a vintage car at stake, results in an unlikely job for a college professor. Once a week, for an hour or so, he is obliged to drive an old man around.
Almost as a hobby, the professor tries to uncover the old man’s secretive past and in the meantime gets a healthy dose of his own medicine, education, from this unlikeliest of sources. Mr. Aris, the old man, proves to be a fountain of interesting though often obscure and even questionable information. All this makes for a refreshingly new perspective on life.
This book is a treasure trove of fascinating facts. But it is a lot more than that. It is a tale of forbidden love and the terrible consequences of war.
It is an account of abject struggle against poverty and a heart-warming love affair with a country - and a car.
Adventure, friendship, romance, ancient mythology, modern history, mysterious old codes and all these against the backdrop of this beautiful Mediterranean island we know so little about....

Work Description
Driving Miss Daisy meets Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran.... This book is both a journey down memory lane and the history of an island. Filled with fascinating tidbits of information, sometimes controversial, sometimes obscure but always written in a beautiful voice. The best accompaniment if you are visiting Cyprus and especially if you rent a car... Nicely done
Excerpts
The following is an account of such an encounter. I have tried to keep it as close to the facts as I recall them. Because
sometimes real life and real people are larger than fiction.
I hope I have done it justice.
The prefeace
first through his subconscious and then his conscious
mind. He opened his eyes and remained very still.
There! He heard it again. A rasping sound… Like
some kind of a scratching noise. He wondered what it was.
Where it was coming from. Probably a damned rat, munching
onto something down in the basement. Maybe making its
merry way through a book, he thought with mild dismay. He
did not abhor rodents as much as most other people did. Of
course he did not exactly like them either. Nobody did. But he
could tolerate their existence. At least till tomorrow morning.
He made a mental note to do something about this problem
first thing. With that thought he was about to slide into deep
sleep once more.
But then he heard something again. A louder sound this
time. Now he snapped fully awake. This was different. More
rhythmic. He tried to locate its source. Much harder to do this
with the lights out…
It was coming from the door. The front door. Like a tap,
exaggerated by the darkness and the silence of the night. He
waited, again, for what seemed like minutes. Nothing.
“Just my imagination,” he concluded, relieved.
