Edition Notes

Holograph, signed with initials.

William Lloyd Garrison complains of the hot weather and an uncomfortable journey in a sweltering train. They encountered a sudden hail storm in Connecticut. He met George Thompson at John Hopper's house. Mrs. Hopper's mother died two or three months ago.

On page four of the manuscript, there is a postscript by Wendell Phillips Garrison. He writes about the anniversary meeting: "Mr. Phillips opened with a very impersonal criticism of the Administration, and an expositon of the national perils. Father made a 'counter' in favor of Lincoln---briefly." He gives a list of the people who attended the meeting.
