THE COVER
For heroism during action on the Fifth Army's Anzto-Nettuno beachhead in Italy, three officers of the Army Nurse Corps are awarded the Silver Star, the first three women in the history of the United States Army to receive that decoration. The decorations are here presented by Major General John P. Lucas U.S. Army, to (left to right) Lieut. Mary L. Roberts, Dallas; Lieut. Elaine A. Roe, of Whitewater, Wis., and Lieut. Rita Virginia Rourke, Chicago. All three are cited for their coolness and efficiency during a concentrated shelling in February of a field hospital area. Several nurses were killed and many other military personnel were wounded. Power lines were cut, and doctors and nurses were forced to treat and evacuate the wounded by flashlight.
