This Ikenami's picaresque novel set in the Edo period published in 1974 and later adapted into films, TV dramas, and manga.
The title character KUMOKIRI Nizaemon is a fictional great bandit who imposes rules (no murder, no adultery, only steal from the rich) on him and his companions.
Nizaemon is thought to be a mixture portrait of existing robberies in Edo in the late 18th century. Traditional Kabuki and Kosyaku (a style of traditional oral Japanese storytelling) also tell stories of Nizaemon.
