"一名年輕而涉世未深的女老師，受雇前往布萊的鄉間豪宅擔任一對兄妹的家教。天真可愛的學生馬上就收服了老師的心，但老師也注意到豪宅內似乎有些不尋常的氣氛，然後她開始看見一男一女的鬼祟身影，懷疑是前任總管及前任女老師的鬼魂，對小兄妹圖謀不軌。奇怪的是，除了女老師以外，豪宅內其他僕人皆稱沒有看到鬼魂遊蕩，就連小兄妹也不願明說是否遭到鬼魂糾纏。於是，女老師決心只能靠自己保護她心愛的學生，無論這股邪惡的力量有多強大，她都不會讓惡靈得逞。《豪門幽魂》承襲了亨利・詹姆斯喜歡在作品中探討的主題：「束縛」與「控制」，他擅長以年輕女性為敘事主角，精準描寫女性容易招致世俗眼光批評的各種面向，藉此突顯社會陳規舊矩的荒謬與無用。這部作品利用「鬼魂」的概念，突顯女老師在豪宅中的尷尬位置，明則她是豪宅的掌權者，實則處處受限，無法獲知全貌。本書於1898年出版之後，陸續有多位文學評論家發表文章，「撞鬼」派及「發狂」派各有擁護者，甚至因此促成將心理分析理論導入文學批評的流派。綜觀英美文學史，這部篇幅不長的故事，所引發的討論、評論文章數量之多，竟只有喬依思的長篇鉅作《尤里西斯》可與之匹敵。"-- Back cover.
