Lord Montbarry rompe su compromiso con Agnes Lockwood y contrae matrimonio con la condesa Narona. Tras su luna de miel se instalan en un vetusto palacio veneciano junto al asistente de él y el hermano de la condesa. Años más tarde, tendrán lugar una serie de extraños sucesos en la residencia palaciega, transformada en hotel al fallecer Montbarry y desaparecer su asistente.

El hotel encantado es una novela de misterio que mantiene la intriga hasta el final, con un desenlace inesperado típico de las novelas detectivescas y que contiene todos los elementos de este género literario. Inicialmente fue publicada por fascículos en el Belgravia Magazine en 1878, y al año siguiente en formato libro en la editorial Chatto & Windus junto con la historia My Lady's Money.
