Edition Notes
First Latin edition of part six printed Frankfurt am Main, 1596.
Constitutes the sixth part, second issue of the second Latin edition of Theodor de Bry's Great voyages, printed in fourteen parts, in Latin, German, French, and English, in Frankfurt am Main, Oppenheim, and Hanau from 1590-1644, and the Elenchus, an outline of the thirteen Latin parts, published by Matthias Merian in Frankfurt am Main in 1634.
This work has been identified as the second issue of part six of the second Latin edition of the Great voyages by Church.
Imprint from title page to plates, p. [3-4], 2nd count.
The second edition has the same engraved title as that in the first edition and within the same border. During the interval between the printing of the two Latin editions this engraved title seems toe have been cut out of the plate, probably so that the border could be used for the German edition which was printed the year following its first appearance in the Latin edition. When so cut out, whole letters, hyphens, and parts of letters around its entire edge were destroyed. Cf. Church.
The second issue of Latin part six can be identified by its poorly printed title page proper and by the text accompanying the plates which is printed completely in italic; plates 23 and 24 are transposed with the text of one being printed with the plate of the other; and plate 28 has been re-engraved in counter-proof on a smaller plate.
Latin translation, by Urbain Chauveton, of book three of: Historia del Mondo Nuovo / by Girolamo Benzoni, first printed Venice, 1565, which was first printed in Latin, Geneva, 1578, under title: Novae Novi Orbis historiae.
This part contains the third and last portion of Benzoni's History, relating to Peru. In this volume there are also to be found a history of the Canary Islands; a history of the expedition of the French into Florida; and the petition by the widows, children, and friends of the French who had been massacred by the Spanish in 1665 [sic, i.e. 1565]. Cf. Church.
"Brevis svmma earvm rervm, qvae in tertia Americae parte continentur. Et certis elegantibuśque iconibus illustrata: studio & labore Theodori de Bry Leodiensis civis verò Francofurtensis", p. [3-4], 2nd count, has letterpress title page with imprint: Oppenheimii ex officina typographica Hieronymi Galleri, sumptibus Johannis-Theodori de Bry Fil. civis & Bibliop. Oppenheim. M DC XVII.
