El presente libro capta fielmente el ambiente de nerviosismo que reinaba en Málaga durante las primeras semanas de la Guerra Civil. Constituye, por lo tanto, un documento fidedigno de aquella época. Gamel Woolsey tomó el título de una obra del poeta T. S. Eliot, The Hollow Men: «Será lo mismo en el otro reino de la muerte?».

Según dice la autora en una carta a Lewelyn Powys: «No es solo una historia de la Guerra Civil sino también de mi corazón, y es la única cosa mía que realmente he querido publicar».
