Leur sauvetage passa alors pour un miracle, mais quand les journaux révélèrent qu'ils avaient dû manger leurs morts pour survivre, l'émotion fut énorme et même le scandale. L'Eglise catholique prit cependant fait et cause pour les rescapés.
