Konrad Klapheck

Venus ex Machina

Konrad Klapheck (Düsseldorf 1935) is one of the most important personalities of post-war German art history. In 1955, as an art student, he made his first still life, a magical realistic painting of a typewriter. This was the beginning of a long and fruitful international career, which for more than four decades was devoted to machines and industrial objects, the businesslike detachment of the depiction of which stands in striking contrast to the psychological and sexual associations they often evoke. In the 1960s he developed contacts with gallery owners in Paris and New York who had come to see in him a precursor of developments such as pop art. It was not until the end of the last century that he found new inspiration in the themes and idols of his youth: the human figure in funny erotic mise en scenes and portraits of jazz musicians and orchestras. And with those memories began a late style change such as few predecessors have known. Exhibition: Museum MORE, Gorssel, The Netherlands (05.06.-26.09.2021)

Exhibition: Museum MORE, Gorssel, The Netherlands (05.06.-26.09.2021)
