The exhibition presents a selection of works donated by the Sammlung Hoffman to the Dresden State Art Collections as well as chosen artworks from the National Gallery Prague and private collections related to contemporary Czech artistic production. At the entrance to the exhibition, the titular work by filmmaker Jan Švankmajer marks a broad spectrum of questions: his surrealist animated film from 1982 interrogates fundamental themes such as love and pain, loss and death, aggression and fear, but also tragedy and comedy, chaos and formation and ultimately art itself. The motifs of creation and creative energy form the core of a conversation between vastly diverse artistic positions. In both cautious and bold, unambiguous and unlikely confrontations, the works from both collections unfold new potential. The exhibition features works by, among others, Marina Abramović, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Christian Boltanski, Monica Bonvicini, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Isa Genzken, Félix González-Torres, Antony Gormley, Keith Haring, William Kentridge, A.R. Penck, Frank Stella and Andy Warhol donated by the Sammlung Hoffmann to the Dresden State Art Collections as well as selected artworks by Josef Bolf, Jiří Černický, Krištof Kintera, Stanislav Kolíbal, Kateřina Šedá, Adriena Šimotová and František Skála.
