An edition of Mark Manders (1997)

Mark Manders

composition with yellow verticals

This diminutive volume is published in conjunction with the exhibition 'The Absence of Mark Manders' at the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht, an extensive retrospective of the Dutch artist. It shows how his distinct oeuvre develops organically, from old work that has been revised to his latest creations. The exhibition therefore constitutes both an overview of the artist's work and a new step in his artistic process, and also makes visible how his body of work is constantly developing. Both the exhibition and book present Manders's sculptures and installations in an intimate and dynamic way, with the latter offering many behind-the-scenes glimpses at his artistic process. Exhibition: Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, The Netherlands (04.02-24.05.2020).

Work Description

Published on the occasion of an exhibition at Collezione Maramotti centring on the installation piece "Isolated Bathroom / Composition with Four Colors" by Dutch artist Mark Manders, this book comprises a lengthy series of black-and-white photographs from behind the scenes and of the artist's working environment, together with his creative process. In a special insert, Manders explains his thoughts on the piece, which Mario Diacono then further analyses in detail, discussing the spatial and semantic hierarchy of elements, its triggering of multiple associations, and relationship with Manders' entire body of work, extending from "Self-portrait as a building", begun in 1986. Exhibition: Collezione Maramotti, Reggio Emilia, Italy (09.03-28.09.2014).
