Walter Swennen started his artistic life as a poet, but switched to painting as his primary means of expression in the early 1980s. Although his oeuvre varies greatly in scale, style, and materials, it can be seen as an ongoing exploration into the nature, potentialities, and limitations of painting, the fundamental question of what subject matter to choose, and how to depict it. Swennen is recognised for his experimental and associative approach to painting, in which meanings perpetually float and shift across images that recall a familiar place or situation; a place where something has happened. This compact but dense catalogue is filled with numerous such works. Exhibition: Xavier Hufkens Galerie, Brussels, Belgium (20.11.2014-17.01.2015).

Work Description
Walter Swennen is one of Belgium's foremost contemporary painters. 'Too Many Words' brings together all the paintings made between 2017 and 2020, and five recent essays and interviews written by Hans Theys. As such, this publication follows the book 'Hic Haec Hoc' (2016), which reproduced all of Swennen's paintings made between 2013 and 2016.0'Too Many Words' also contains correspondence, interviews, artist writings, and drawings from the same period, many of which have not been published before, as well as a selection of recently rediscovered older paintings.00Exhibition: Xavier Hufkens Galerie, Brussels, Belgium (27.01.-27.02.2021).
