本书是中国最早的一部用纪传体来记述西夏史的汉文史作,也是传世的汉文西夏史籍中惟一一部纪传体断代西夏史.但有关于此书的编撰者,卷数以及内容等诸多问题上,学界仍有不同意见.尽管如此,本书仍为研究西夏地理,职官,姓氏等搜集,提供了宝贵的历史资料,对后人编写西夏史的影响非常大.
