Annie Bennett was left on her own at the NYC Municipal Orphanage Girls Annex during the Great Depression. Miss Hannigan, the orphanage's tyrannical manager, starves and forces the orphans to do slave labor. Annie escapes and befriends a dog, Sandy, but is caught by police officer Lt. Ward. When Daddy Warbucks decides to take in an orphan for Christmas, Grace Farrell chooses Annie and they are brought to his wealthy estate. Daddy Warbucks announces a $50,000 reward for anyone who can prove they are Annie's biological parents. Lily is left with the orphans after Miss Hannigan and Rooster leave, but she accidentally tells the secret. President Franklin D. Roosevelt arrests them and enrages Miss Hannigan, who is carted off to a psychiatric hospital. President Roosevelt presents evidence to Annie that her real parents are David and Margaret Bennett, but they had died several years earlier. Daddy Warbucks adopts Annie and promises that all other orphans will be adopted by stable families. Annie lives happily with her new parents and Sandy.
