L’homme qu’on appelait jeudi ; un cauchemar (The Man Who Was Thursday : A Nightmare) paru en 1908 est le plus célèbre “thriller métaphysique” de Chesterton. Sa traduction (de 1911…) méritait sérieusement un rajeunissement, d’autant qu’il manquait des passages… Ce roman est considéré comme une œuvre charnière du XXe siècle, entre Lewis Carroll et Kafka ou Borges qui d’ailleurs le vénérait.
Plus qu’un roman policier, il s’agit aussi d’un roman d’aventure, d’une sorte de vaudeville, d’apologue, de variation philosophique et humoristique qui en fait un objet littéraire inclassable et qu’on peut lire à plusieurs niveaux.
