One question which may be raised regarding the scope of this concordance is that of why only the Preparatory Meditations, God's Determinations, and the miscellaneous poems in Donald Stanford's The Poems of Edward Taylor were included. The primary justification for the limitation is that these poems represent the clearly superior body of poetry on which Taylor's reputation rests, and they have received virtually all of the scholarly attention given to Taylor's work. Secondly, the Stanford edition is the only complete edition of the meditations, and finally, the sheer bulk of a work which would include the earliest poems, The Metrical History, or any of Taylor's prose works precludes further inclusions in an already cumbersome production. - Preface.
