Edition Notes
"Selected bibliography": p. [269]-281.
The merry devil of Edmonton, first published in 1608, has been variously ascribed to Shakespeare, Thomas Dekker, Thomas Heywood, and others. It has been confused by some authorities with the prose tract (The life and death of the merry devil of Edmonton) entered the same year at Stationers' hall. The tract has been attributed to both Antony and Thomas Brewer.
With reproduction of original t.-p.: The merry devil of Edmonton. As it hath beene sundry times acted, by His Majesties Seruants, at the Globe, on the banke-side. London, Printed by Henry Ballard for Arthur Iohnson, 1608.
The tract is a reprint of the earliest extant edition, which has title: The life and death of the merry deuill of Edmonton. With the pleasant prancks of Smug the Smith, Sir Iohn, and mine host of the George, about the stealing of venison. By T.B. Printed by T.P. for Francis Faulkner, 1631.
