"The main purpose of this section is to establish the origin and nature of the debate about what constitutes the subject of literary studies in English today it also provides a model for the sections which follow, setting up a position which is then debated, explicitly or implicitly, by the extracts that follow-the whole section anticipating later sections and debates."
