This book describes mobile speech links, with detailed attention given to aspects of both radio and baseband processing techniques. The opening chapter is designed to guide the reader through the concepts of radio propagation, multiple access methods, first and second generation mobile radio systems to cordless telecommunications and teletraffic aspects. The remaining chapters give the reader an indepth knowledge of digital mobile radio communications.
Commencing with the backbone subject of propagation, the complexities of the mobile radio channel are presented, providing an appreciation for the reasons why mobile radio equipment is inherently complex if good quality voice communications are to be achieved. Speech encoding is given a special place in the book, with particular emphasis on analysis-by-synthesis techniques. This is followed by a detailed account of channel coding and interleaving methods.
Quaternary frequency shift keying and continuous phase modulation methods are addressed next. The complexities of Viterbi equalisation are explained. After a treatise on slow frequency hopping, the final chapter is a comprehensive description of the GSM system.
