"Ambitious, charismatic, and reliable, never conformist or conventional, Luigi Moretti (1907-1973) was both a gifted architect and an unusual figure. This book - the first monograph on the Italian architect to appear in English - reveals through essays, projects, and an anthology of his own writings the complex trails of Moretti's personality and of his curious and cultured mind.

Generously illustrated, the volume encourages a full appreciation of his work, free of the presumptions that for decades have clouded it."--BOOK JACKET.

First Sentence

""The thought of making a large edifice that expresses violence and is present in certain moments and in others expresses abandonment, in an endless repetition, like you see in a Chinese manuscript, or a Greek colonnade, or a stochastic facade system such as that of the Port Pia," Luigi Moretti wrote in a 1969 letter to Agnoldomenico Pica about the twin buildings at Esposizione Universale di Roma (EUR), "brought me to think of that endless row of vertical elements that, at a certain point, either you tire of seeing, or you do not waste more time looking at once you have understood it sufficiently."
