The process of speech comprehension can be divided into a number of subprocesses ranging from those responsible for matching acoustic input against some internal representation of the words in the language to those involved in extracting meaning from the string(s) of lexical items hypothesized by the lexical-access process and constructing a message-level interpretation of the sentence.
