Leonora 'the daughter of the manor' and James Galbraith become acquainted when he sets up as the local doctor - when the previous gentleman retires for his health. Her family has lost much of their wealth, but still feels attached at the roots to their home and their community.
Her parents have the sort of pride that allows their daughter to become basically a home slave, but the concept of her working for hire is repugnant. The way opens up for her to do just that, however, without hurting their 'gentle' expectations too deeply. Her parents are not the mean-spirited type, just unable to cope efficiently with their current situation.
Along the way, those who deserve it find happiness. But first, Leonora has to realize the character of a man she had previously trusted.
