Holograph, signed.
On Wednesday morning (July 4th) Caroline Weston and Anne Warren Weston went to hear Garrison in the [Marlboro?] Chapel where most of the audience "bore what was very strong meat very well." Anne went to the Old South Church to hear Hubbard Winslow, "but he was so stupid and commonplace that I could not stay." In the evening, they saw beautiful fireworks on the Common. Anne has promised Mrs. Philbrick to promote the inviting of Sarah M. Grimke to Massachusetts. Ann Terry Phillips (Mrs. Wendell Phillips) "says she frightens the ministers' wives about the country half to death, talking on the woman question." Garrison read to Anne Warren Weston a letter from Dr. [Joel] Hawes to George Benson, "all peel, just like an onion. Scared to death about the woman question." Describes an incident showing Amos A. Phelps's attitude toward women on committees. At the Peace convention on Sept. 18th, women are to take their places.
