Edition Notes
Copy of letter. Whereabouts of original manuscript unknown.
A severe spinal attack with neuralgia and fever has prevented William Lloyd Garrison from writing. Garrison discusses Oliver Johnson's application for an increase in salary. He has not spoken to the committee about it because the expenses for the National Anti-Slavery Standard are already so great. Some wish to discontinue the newspaper. The committee has just voted to engage Harriet Martineau as a correspondent at £50 per annum. He hopes that the subscription list will increase so as to allow for raising Oliver Johnson's salary. He refers to the expense of city living. Garrison's house "is a semi-hotel" for anti-slavery friends and visitors. He discusses Arnold Buffum's obituary, written by Lewis Tappan. The anniversary of their society is approaching and Garrison mentions some prospective speakers.
