Edition Notes

First published at Venice by Giorgio Angelieri, 1575. The present ed. has a dedication by Zacharia Cavalcalbò, dated 26 July 1588.

In the form of a dialog between Alvigi Gonzaga ("Rodomonte") and Lodovico Boccadiferro, a philosopher, with Count d'Agomonte in the 3rd pt.

Woodcut coat of arms on t.p. of Count Pirro Malvesi, to whom the work is dedicated. Engraved port. of Vizani, facing leaf 1v. Nine full-page engravings, 7 of which depict the guard positions, with 2 tree diagrams devoted respectively to the guards and the attacks. Historiated initial on †2r depicting Aeneas and Anchises fleeing Troy. Five additional floriated and grotesque initials. Headpieces.

Signatures: †⁴ -*⁴ A-X⁴.

Brunet V, 1216; suppl. II, 887

Binding: old limp vellum. "SCHERMO" written on spine. Concentric circles drawn with compasses on both covers. Remains of 2 pairs of ties at foredge.

A window has been cut in the later front pastedown to show an old inscription praising the illustrations cut by the "famoso Sandeler." Above at upper left is a bookplate with monogram composed of V, d, and G with the motto "je fus sage je fus fou"; a larger version of the bookplate is centered on the back pastedown. Traces remain on t.p. and p. [85] of two stamps.

The Malvesi arms on the t.p. have been illuminated with opaque color and gold, and copied by hand on †4v at the end of the dedication with "Pirro Malvezzi" added on a ribbon below. The woodcut initials have been similarly illuminated.
