Preface signed: B.F.B., Philadelphia, September 1st, 1868.

"These 'Letters' were originally published in a monthly magazine (The Swedenborgian) which was under the editorial charge of the author. The immediate occasion of them was a paragraph in Mr. Beecher's interesting, and for the most part admirable, sermon on 'Understanding God', published in The Independent of March 31, 1859."--Pref.
