The Republic of Gran Colombia lasted from 1819-1831 and encompassed the present day countries of Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela, and parts of northern Peru, western Guyana, and northwest Brazil. Simón Bolívar served as its first president from 1819-1830 from the capital in Bogotá. It dissolved in November of 1831 due to the political differences and tensions among the peoples of the different present day countries, which made up the republic.

This publication, an attack on the moral character Agustín Villavicencio, accuses the author of a pamphlet titled "Manifiesto" of being an associate of Agustín Villavicencio. According to Rivadeneyra, Agustín Villavicencio wanted to defame Dr. Cayetano Ramírez, who went by the pseudonym Cura de Montecristi.
