This is an essay about organizational innovation and experimentation in the business of science. Alfred Chandler taught us that organizational innovation and technological innovation are equal partners in the process of economic growth. Indeed, one often requires the other. In the late 19th and early 20th century, the large‐scale modern corporation both shaped and was shaped by advances in electrification, mass production, and transportation. Today, the specific technologies driving growth are, of course, quite different than they were a century ago. But, the fundamental lesson—that these technologies may require new organizational forms—is as relevant today now as it was then.
