The dedication of the 1692 edition states that the play was originally written by Antony Rivers, but this statement has been discredited by Dyce and others. cf. Gillow's Bibliographical dictionary of English Catholics, v. 5, p. 429, for discussion of the Anthony Rivers alias Whitelock who may have been the author
