Edition Notes
Holograph, signed with initials.
William Lloyd Garrison received twelve copies of the Independent and its supplement; he only wanted the supplements, which contain an article by him. Does Oliver Johnson want the Independents returned? Garrison asks about the identity of A. Hunker, who "is writing a capital series of satirical sketches in one of the Troy papers." Garrison tells about Henry Villard's Christmas tree. He discusses the views of Professor Tayler Lewis on the subject of reading the Bible in public schools. Garrison writes: "But I see God as clearly in arithmetic, algebra, and geography, as I do in any series of theological propositions." He thinks E. M. Stanton's death is a great loss to the nation.
